LYC Swimming Pool
Policy, Rules and Regulations 2009

1. General Information
The LYC Swimming Pool is a “Swim at Your Own Risk” pool. A lifeguard will not always be on duty.
The pool will be operated in accordance with the bylaws of the Lewes Yacht Club and all applicable rules of the State of Delaware. The LYC is a non-smoking facility. A designated smoking area is located in front of the LYC Club House.
2. Pool Staff Responsibilities
The pool staff consists of the Pool Manager, Swim Team Coach, Asst Swim Team Coach, Lifeguards, Program Instructors and Gate Monitor.
The Pool Staff have the responsibility and authority to:
a) Promote fun for all with respect to the diverse requirements of the membership.
b) Operate and maintain the pool and all of its facilities. The pool manager is responsible for the day to day operation.
c) Manage, schedule and execute approved LYC Swimming Pool Programs. (i.e., Swimming Lessons, Swim Team Practice/Meets, Aquacise, and any special events)
d) Maintain a professional appearance and attitude.
e) Enforce the rules and have the authority to exercise due diligence in determining if a patron should be removed from the pool area.
f) Clear the pool and pool deck of all patrons in respect to public safety.
g) Direct any comments or criticisms of the pool management or facilities to the Pool Committee Chairman or Vice Chairman.
h) Request assistance from the Pool Committee Chairman, Vice Chairman or Pool Committee Members.
i) Test the pool water in accordance with The State of Delaware’s Administrative Code, Section 4400, Chapter 4464 Public Swimming Pools.
j) Ensure all safety equipment and first aid supplies are present, easily accessible, in good working order or in good supply.
The Pool Manager reports directly to the Pool Committee Chairman or Vice Chairman who are here to assist in decision making and policy interpretation or change. The above list is for guidance and clarification purposes, and is not all inclusive. Additional requirements are listed on each staff member’s job description.
3. Pool Posted Rules
LYC Pool Rules
The LYC Swimming Pool is a “Swim at Your Own Risk” pool.
A lifeguard will NOT always be on duty.
1) All swimmers should shower prior to entering the pool.
2) No Running or horseplay around the pool.
3) No one is allowed to swim alone.
4) Inflatable devices, rafts, inner-tubes etc. will not be allowed in the pool.
5) All swimmers should respect the rights of others.
6) All children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Children ages 12 to 15 years old, not accompanied by a parent or guardian, must pass a swimming test administered by the Pool Manager or a lifeguard.
7) All children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at times when the pool is unguarded.
8) Animals are not permitted within the pool facility with the exception of service animals.
9) Guests must be accompanied by the sponsoring member upon entering the pool area.
10) Rings, kickboards, balls, and other pool toys/devices may be used at the lifeguard’s discretion given the toys/devices are being used correctly.
11) Starting blocks are for competition use only.
12) No food or glass is allowed in the pool area.
13) Children that are not yet toilet trained must wear a swim diaper.
14) Children using the wading pool must be accompanied by a parent
15) or guardian at all times.
*** The Lifeguard will enforce these rules and make any additions deemed necessary. If any member has questions or concerns, the Pool Manager will be happy to address them through the Pool Committee.
4. Membership Policy as related to the pool
a) Members, who have employed a non-member to take care of their minor children, are permitted to have such person bring their children to the pool without paying a guest fee.
b) Members must present their LYC membership card or LYC dinning card to the Gate Monitor and sign in for admittance to the pool.
c) No member may entertain more than 8 guests at any one time and no individual may be a guest more than 6 times in a season.
d) A guest must be accompanied by the sponsoring member upon entering the pool area. A sponsoring member may be the child of a member, 12 years of age or older.
e) Guests will be signed in by the sponsoring member and guest fees will be paid to the Gate Monitor.
f) Guests under the age of 2 are free.
g) A guest is anyone who is not a member. Grandchildren of members (under the age of 18), are considered members, not guests.
5. Pool Hours and Use
The pool opens Memorial Day weekend and is open till the end of September. The pool is unguarded till mid-June. The pool is open 7 days a week through Labor Day. After Labor Day till the end of September the pool is unguarded. Pool hours may vary, but the basic schedule is listed below:
June-July (Swim Team Season)

Lap swimming, Aquacise and Swim Team are exclusive events, open swim is not permitted. The pool deck is open to all members whenever the pool is open.
Weather permitting; the pool will be open for swimming during the months of May and September.
Two lap lanes will be available for lap swimming when the pool is open, except during swim team practices and swim meets.
Additional Policy and Information
• Swimming lessons can be scheduled via the Pool Manager.
• All injuries that occur at the pool, regardless of how slight, must be reported to the lifeguard or Pool Manager.
• Alcoholic beverages are allowed on the pool deck provided they were purchased from LYC. Juice drinks, bottled water, soda, sports drinks may be brought into the pool facility. No glass containers.
