August 2006

Sunday August 27th turned out to be a blustery day as many LYC members set sail on the boats of our very generous members and friends for an evening cruise on the Delaware Bay. The strong southeast winds made for great sailing as we cleared the inlet and headed for the ocean. In the lee of the Lewes shoreline, conditions were perfect! Our captains and crews unfurled the sails and we were off for the ride of a lifetime! Approaching the point at Cape Henlopen, a large pod of dolphins were sighted. They seemed to be drawn to the sailboats and obviously enjoyed cruising right along side what a spectacular sight! As we cleared the point the full force of the wind became evident as the relatively calm seas of the bay turned into 5 ft. swells exhilarating! Our sleek vessels took the rough seas in stride as we cruised the ocean and then turned for an up close look at the breakwaters before returning to the calm waters off Lewes.
We want to offer our most sincere thanks to our hosts, Captains Dave Cerney, Scott Gaston, Hugh Martin, and especially to Bill Reardon for organizing this memorable day!
